Opportunity

For years, learning about KiwiSaver at ANZ meant sitting through a one-and-a-half-day workshop. It was dense, it was scheduled, and by the time a new banker finished it, much of what they’d heard had already started to fade.

As New Zealand’s largest KiwiSaver provider, ANZ couldn’t afford that gap. Nearly one in two New Zealanders banks with ANZ, and KiwiSaver is one of the most important conversations a banker can have with a customer. Getting it right — with confidence, with clarity, at the right moment — matters commercially and for the people they serve.

ANZ’s Capability team knew the current learning wasn’t working. New starters had to wait for a session before they could enrol a single customer. Bankers in Bengaluru or regional branches couldn’t always get a seat. And with KiwiSaver legislation changing regularly, keeping the content up to date was a constant battle. Something had to change.

Approach

The team started by asking the right people the right questions. Through co-design sessions with frontline bankers, product specialists, and team leaders, a picture emerged: learners didn’t just need better content. They needed a completely different kind of experience.

What came back from those conversations was unexpected and exciting. KiwiSaver is uniquely New Zealand. So why not make the learning feel that way, too?

The concept of KiwiSaver National Park was born: a five-module journey through a richly imagined New Zealand landscape, guided by Ranger Sam, filled with native birdsong, indigenous wildlife, and the kind of storytelling that makes you forget you’re doing a compliance module. ANZ built the storyboards. Inspire Group brought the world to life.

Solution

From the moment learners sign their name in the virtual visitors’ book, the experience is theirs. Ranger Sam greets them by name throughout the journey — a small detail that made a big impression in feedback. Pause pages let them breathe, reflect, and listen to birdsong recorded from a designer’s own backyard and the Department of Conservation archive.

Each of the five modules has its own visual world and its own story to tell — from KiwiSaver basics to fund options to the ongoing relationship ANZ builds with every member. Activities are woven into the landscape: learners pick berries from a native Kŏtukutuku tree, dodge a Wētā, and abseil down a mountain. The learning never stops, feeling like a journey.

Built in Chameleon Creator, the modules live inside ANZ’s SuccessFactors library, count towards CPD points, and — crucially — can be updated by ANZ staff whenever legislation changes. No external contractors. No lag. Just current, accurate knowledge at a banker’s fingertips whenever they need it.

“The solution is a masterclass in engaging, inclusive learning design — storytelling, te reo Māori, native wildlife, and interactive media making complex financial content genuinely enjoyable.”

Outcomes

In eight months, 2,699 module completions. More than 650 of those came from bankers who had no requirement to be there — they came back because they wanted to.

The numbers behind those conversations tell their own story. KiwiSaver sales rose an average of 25% over the period, peaking at 62% in October 2025. Bankers fresh from the new induction are signing up 2.09 customers in their first month, compared to 1.38 under the old model. Confidence survey results after induction reflected what the learner feedback word cloud already made clear: people felt ready.

For ANZ, KiwiSaver National Park has become more than a learning programme. It’s the benchmark — the moment the organisation proved that when you design learning people actually want to do, the results follow.

“You have all been SO amazing to work alongside and, as I may have mentioned before, something that’s really stood out is your genuine enthusiasm, passion, and excitement working on this project – it really has felt like our vision has not only been ‘accepted’, but also validated and supported, right from day one…And, of course, the work Mitelene, Ashley, Mike, and all of you at Inspire have put in to not only bring it to life in the most amazing way but also add SO much additional value and creativity is beyond what we could’ve expected! I’m sure I speak for both Justine and myself when I say we’d absolutely love to work with you all again.”
– Jamie Sutcliffe, Capability Design Manager

“Thank you so much Mitelene, Ashley, Mike and the whole Inspire team for helping turn this learning into such an amazing experience. It’s been a real pleasure to work on this project with you. You’ve brought our storyboards to life – the amazing graphics and activities have added so much value to the modules. We are so proud of the final product and can’t wait to share it with our learners.”
